1. Welcome to Elephant Yard Marker
Inscription. This area of town was part of Kendal's commercial centre during the heyday of the wool trade. Carriers who brought goods to Kendal by pack horse, carts and wagons needed a place to rest for themselves and their animals. Elephant yard derives its name from the Elephant Inn that originally stood on this site dating from around 1820. All manner of shops and businesses grew to service the needs of daily life. The images you see here are a selection of pictures representing this area kindly loaned from the wonderful photography archive of the late Margaret Duff.
