US Brig Lawrence: Ship that Changed the War
Perry's Victory and International Peace Memorial
| | National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior | |
Right here on the morning of September 10, 1813, the Battle of Lake Erie was about to begin. The US Brig Lawrence raised her battle flag as the flotilla of nine ships sailed from Put-in-Bay. The American Commander, Oliver Hazard Perry, directed his ships to engage the British vessels sailing across the lake.
By the end of the day, American ships soundly defeated the British in an intense naval battle.
The engraving on the walkway shows the full length of the Lawrence ship deck. How would it feel to stand here at the start of battle?
DONT GIVE UP THE SHIP.
