Morton Building

Morton Building. . Dr. David Ferdinand Morton M.D. was a physician and surgeon born in Cape Girardeau County, Missouri on April 3, 1858. After graduating from medical school, he moved to Perryville where he became a prominent citizen and successful druggist and doctor. He was known as D.F. Morton. In the spring of 1898, Morton built a red two-story brick business house at the corner of Jackson and West Ste. Maries Streets. On the first floor was Morton's Drug Store. The second floor was divided into convenient and well-lit office rooms including a room for his medical practice and the telephone company. The entire building had steam heat and water. In December 1906, Morton erected an adjoining building which structurally mirrored his original. The Perryville Post Office occupied the first floor and Brown and Fenwick Real Estate and Abstract Company was upstairs. The post office and telephone company would remain at this location until 1935, when they moved to two new brick buildings a block off the square. , In January 1929, D.F. Morton sold the two buildings to Mr. and Mrs. Oswald J. Bergman. BERGMAN was added to the second cornice, and it became known as the Bergman Building. Mrs. Bergman and D.F. Morton's nephew, William Cowley, became partners in a ladies clothing shop on the left. The Manhattan Café opened in 1936 on the right and was replaced by the Ozark 5c and 10c Store which served the community for 30 years until 1975. Wilson removed a section of the interior wall connecting the two buildings for the first time. enlarging the retail floor space. In 1980, Mr. and Mrs. Ronnie Zahner purchased both buildings and opened Shamrock Hair and Health. In 1991, Carolyn Cassout bought the building and opened Hair Essentials and a Café. Starting in 2013, the Morton/Bergman Building is owned by Carisa Stark and home to Mary Jane Burgers and Brew, named after Grandma Mary Jane Buchheit. ,
