Inscription.
Never since the opening of the War has there been such a complete decisive overthrow of the enemy's Cavalry.

George Armstrong Custer in his report after the Woodstock Races or Battle of Toms' Brook, 1864. He opened the battle with a gallant bow to the Confederate Commander, West Point classmate General Thomas Rosser.

Major General Phil Sheridan of Somerset, Ohio, Custer's last Civil War commander, inspired the "Boy General" and taught him many lessons.

From Gettysburg to Appomattox, first as brigade commander, then as division commander, Custer shone as a dashing, aggressive cavalry leader, known on both sides for lightning, overwhelming charges. His service in the Shenandoah Valley brought him the second star of a major general. At Appomattox in April 1865, he received the white towel that signified General Lee's readiness to surrender.

So this is the young woman whose husband goes into a charge with a whoop and a shout.
Abraham Lincoln, upon being introduced to Mrs. George Armstrong Custer at a presidential reception, 1864.

Custer's slashing cavalry charges, youth, and colorful garb and personality kept him constantly in the newspapers.

With Custer's Civil War battle cry, "Come on, you Wolverines!" his Michigan cavalry brigade struck fear in Confederate hearts.
