1. Mt Soledad National Veterans Memorial Marker
The Mt Soledad National Veterans Memorial is one of the most unique veterans memorials in America. It is the only one honoring veterans living and deceased from the Revolutionary War to current day conflicts.
The Mt. Soledad Memorial Association was founded in 1952 by American Legion Post 275 of La Jolla. The Association built a cross at the site in 1954 to honor members of the service who gave their lives during World War I, World War II and the Korean conflict.
The first Memorial walls were built in 2000. The black granite plaques are the same type of granite that comprise the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC. These plaques now tell the stories of veterans who have served our nation honorably throughout its history.
The Memorial was involved in years of litigation regarding the presence of a cross on public land. The case was resolved in 2015 when the Memorial became private property after the land around the Memorial was purchased by the Mt. Soledad Memorial Association.
