1. The Aqueduct Lock Marker
Inscription. Located on the west side near the third aqueduct, it replaced the lock demolished when the third canal was built. It was made of cut-stone and measured 150'L X 26.5'W and 10'D. Ships could pass into the Welland River to service the industries around Niagara St. (North Main St) while allowing rafts and scows of timber to be brought down the river from Wellandport for destinations via the main canal.

In 1926 the lock was dismantled to make way for the present-day syphon and river that was diverted from its original course. The syphon culvert was built in October 1925 to allow the river to flow below the canal. For more information about the structure, please see the location itself.
