1. The Oille Fountain - Marker
Inscription. The Oille Fountain, donated by Dr. Lucius Oille (1830-1903) in 1878, stands as a testament to civic dedication and public health. Designed by local architect Sydney Rose Badgley, it commemorates the successful Waterworks Project of 1875-76, which brought clean drinking water to residents and significantly improved sanitation and fire suppression. The fountain served pets, horses and people, with tin cups provided for public use.

Dr Oille, the city's second mayor and longtime chair of the Waterworks Commission played a key role in industrializing St. Catharines by establishing its railroad and streetcar systems. His advocacy and contributions helped shape the city's infrastructure, fostering economic expansion and improvements to public health.

For decades, a geranium was planted in the bowl atop the fountain to honour Oille's legacy, a tradition maintained by the Historical Society of St. Catharines since the late 1980s.

The fountain remains a stalwart symbol of modern industrialization and a witness to the changing character of the city.
