The Giant Graniteware Coffee Pot
"Pouring out history one cup at a time"
Standing 16 feet tall, this enamelware coffee pot isn't just a roadside novelty - it's a symbol of Granite City's industrial heritage. Modeled after the iconic graniteware produced by the NESCO Company, it honors the very process that gave our town its name.
In the early 1900s, Granite City became a center for enamelware manufacturing, thanks to the Niedringhaus brothers, who founded Granite City Steel Company and brought with them a revolutionary enameling technique from Germany. Their company, National Enameling and Stamping Company (NESCO), became one of the largest producers of enamel-coated kitchenware in the United States.
These speckled pots and pans, known as "graniteware," were a staple in American kitchens for generations - practical, beautiful, and built to last. The success of NESCO helped fuel the growth of Granite City, attracting workers from around the world and shaping the city's unique identity.
Today this oversized coffee pot, sitting on actual bricks from the Nesco Plant, pays homage celebrating the innovation, craftsmanship, and hard work that brewed the spirit of Granite City.
