Seeking a Suitable Climate for Growing American Rubber
During the earliest decades of the 20th century, natural rubber was an important commodity used in a variety of products and industrial applications, especially in the U.S., where 71% of the world's rubber was consumed. Rubber trees were grown and latex harvested in South Asia. Half a world away, inventor Thomas Edison, automotive industrialist Henry Ford, and "Tire King" Harvey Firestone were concerned about the availability and cost of the rubber supply to their respective businesses in the unpredictable world politics of the times. Together, they combined resources to form the Edison Botanic Research Corporation in 1927.

In 1928, they built the laboratory in Fort Myers in an effort to find a domestic source of rubber that could be grown and cultivated on American soil. Edison's property was eventually transformed into several acres of experimental plots with many different types of rubber plants growing throughout.

Rubber quality and quantity were examined repeatedly throughout the project, with over 17,000 specimens from dozens of countries being tested. Goldenrod, a plant often thought of as a weed, became Edison's plant of choice.
