History on the Former Mill and Carpentry Shop of the Port Dalhousie Gate Yard. . In 1844, this land was sold to the Board of Works. It was used to establish a portion of the "Government Gate Yard" which contained buildings, tools, machinery and the necessary implements to construct, maintain and repair the Second and later Third Welland Canal. Some of the people who had worked on the yard were identified as "sailors on the Great Lakes." , In 1927, a saw mill and carpentry shop existed on the property along with other buildings including lumber storage. Two years later in 1929, a two storey brick-clad, wood-frame building existed as a mill within the Government Gate Yard. The first floor was used as a mill and the second storey as a carpentry shop. Attached to the building was a two storey machine shop and a single storey boiler room. , On July 17, 1951, the Board of Works sold the land to the Trustees of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #350. After the purchase of the property, the building was no longer used for mill operations. Interior renovations were made by the Legion to the building shortly after ownership. , The building was used for the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #350 until it was demolished in February of 2019, a legacy of 68 years. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #350 will continue its Legacy on the site, as it is an anchor tenant in the new building constructed from 2019-2021.
