To Giovanni Becatti
Archaeologist and historian of ancient art, inspiring teacher to many generations of students. He was inspector and then director of the Ostia excavations from 1938 to 1954. He documented with expertise and passion the excavations for the 1942 Rome Universal Exposition. He discovered and published the opus sectile building of Porta Marina. He launched the educational project at the Baths of the Swimmer. He was versatile, modest, and hardworking. The Archaeological Park of Ostia Antica, heir to the Archaeological Superintendence of Ostia, places a memorial to its distinguished colleague and teacher on the fiftieth anniversary of his passing.
