Watford City in McKenzie County, North Dakota — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
The Long X Trail: A Dusty Trail to Greener Pastures
Inscription.
In the Spring of 1844, two brothers and their team of cowboys drove a herd of 4,000 longhorn cattle through the Little Missouri River Valley in front of you.
It had been a long, grueling journey from Texas. Rumors of abundant grass sent them east from Montana into the Little Missouri Badlands. They must have found what they were looking for.
The Reynolds brothers established the Long X Ranch a few miles to the north of this spot. Over the next 4 years, they drove several more herds from Texas and saw their operation grow into one of the largest in the area.
Driving On
Cattle drives along the Little Missouri River and Long X Trail continued for decades. Today, ranching remains an important part of Western North Dakota's heritage.
