Racism and Discrimination
From the beginning of the gold mining boom, pervasive racism disrupted the lives of the Tlingit.. They were forced to adopt new ways and punished for practicing traditional ways. Restrictions radically altered where they could live, socialize, attend school, work, tie up their boats, hunt, fish, gather and do business.
These signs tell a story of a troubled past that continues to shape the present. They also tell a story of a community celebrating its peoples through storytelling, art, and public places like Heritage and Manila Squares. We welcome all people to Juneau and hope you enjoy our home.
Manila Square and Honoring the Filipino Community
In the early 1900s, many Filipinos came to work in Alaska's fishing and mining industry. Often, these workers married Tlingit women creating a lasting bond between the two communities.
In the 1950s, the Filipino Community raised funds to purchase a community hall which is located nearby, in 2002, the plaza across the street was named Manila Square in honor of their contributions to Juneau
