Leaders in Historic Preservation
The Mount Vernon Ladies' Association (MVLA) was the first national historic preservation organization. Founded in 1853, it is also the first women's patriotic society in the United States. Its pioneering efforts in preservation set an important precedent, which has inspired many communities. Its mission is to preserve, restore, and manage the estate of George Washington to the highest standards.

Today, thanks to the Association's early vision, we care for twenty original structures including the Mansion, Tombs, and most outbuildings. Explore these historic structures and reflect on the life and legacy of George Washington firsthand.

Erected by Mount Vernon Ladies’ Association.
