Inscription. Vi fu sepolto Folco Portinari, fondatore dell'Ospedale.

In the centre of the portico of the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova stands the church of Sant'Egidio, an ancient foundation, rebuilt to a design by Bicci di Lorenzo and consecrated by Pope Martin V in 1419. The choir was frescoed between 1439 and 1461 by some of the most famous artists of the Renaissance: Domenico Veneziano, the young Piero della Francesca, Andrea del Castagno and Alesso Baldovinetti, but their work was almost completely lost. The high altar was adorned in 1483 by the "Portinari Triptych" of Hugo Van der Goes, now in the Uffizi. The interior was restored by the architect Bernardo
