Uncovering Hidden History Through Preservation
As part of the landmark privately-funded Mansion Revitalization Project, archaeologists discovered a rare find: multiple intact 18th-century bottles in the cellar. Preliminary analysis of the contents reveals complete cherries, pits, and stems. Unseen since before the war for American Independence, the bottles were recovered from several pits, where they may have been forgotten beneath a brick floor laid in the 1770s.
This significant archaeological find can provide us with valuable insights into the lives and labors of Mount Vernon's 18th-century residents, including the Washingtons, their guests, and the enslaved individuals who prepared the contents and buried the bottles.
