A Tribute to the First Builders of the University of Ottawa
The University of Ottawa started out in Lowertown in 1848 as the College of Bytown. It was a humble, bilingual boys' school run by the fathers of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. The College received a university charter in 1866 and a pontifical charter in 1889. The latter led to the creation of its first three faculties: Arts, Philosophy and Theology. By that point, the University of Ottawa was located in a large building featuring the Academic Hall, a library, a reading room and a chapel. The University of Ottawa's remarkable development in the 19th century was the work of visionaries, including Msgr. Joseph-Bruno Guigues, founder of the University and first Catholic bishop of Bytown. Father Superior Joseph-Henri Tabaret, the heart of the institution for nearly 30 years, and Msgr. Joseph-Thomas Duhamel, first Catholic archbishop of Ottawa and, in 1889, first University chancellor, who played a leading role in the granting of the pontifical charter by Pope Leo XIII. The institution also owed its rapid growth to laypeople such as Louis-Théodore Besserer, a businessman who donated land so that the College of Bytown could move to Sandy Hill in 1856.
