Regarding The Freeing of 72 Political Prisoners in 1944. This marker is one of three that surround the doors to the old San Domenico Convent. Built in the 14th century, the convent was abandoned by the Dominicans in 1787, after Pietro Leopoldo (Peter Leopold), Grand Duke of Tuscany, forced the dissolution of all monastic orders in Tuscany. Later it served as a hospice and then as a prison. It was a men's prison from the mid-19th century until 1991. Details about the political prisoners held here during the Fascist Era could not be found.
