The University of Ottawa and Ontario's Francophones
Since its founding in 1848, the University of Ottawa has had close ties with the Franco-Ontarian community, and has benefited from its energy and loyalty. The University has played a fundamental role in the community's growth and influence, be it through the Société des débats français, founded in 1887, the Centre de recherche en civilisation canadienne-française, created in 1958, its Research Chairs in Canadian Francophonie, its student media, its theatre companies or its improvisational comedy league.
The University has also forged strong ties with Ontario's Francophones through its association with Franco-Ontarian organizations, and through its significant contribution to activities essential to the vitality of Ontario's Francophones. The University has taken many measures to promote bilingualism and a flourishing French-language culture in Ontario. For example, it passed its Regulation on Bilingualism in 1974, it created the Official Languages and Bilingualism Institute in 2007, it established the Standing Committee on Francophone Affairs and Official Languages in 2008 and it became the managing institution of the Language Rights Support Program in 2009.
