President Harding stood here in 1923
July 10, 1923 was proclaimed a holiday by Juneau Mayor Izzy Goldstein. The reason? President Harding, "the first US President to visit the territory of Alaska while in office, arrived in Juneau aboard the Navy Transport Henderson.
Describing the weather, Empire reporter Dorothy E. Haley said, "it rained Newspaper editor EJ. "Stroller Whitened "With the sluice gates haven wide open and the limpid liquid pouring therefrom, Juneau greeted President Harding Harding's enthusiasm did not seem dampened by the weather When EJ. White commented to President Harding
"Mr. President, Alaska has waited 56 years for a visit from the President of the United States
President Harding replied: "In the matter of waiting. I am one year up on Alaska, I am 57 and I have wanted all my life to visit Alaska"
Harding's enjoyment of the last frontier was short-lived. He died soon after leaving Alaska
