1. Water from a Rock Marker
Rock features reflect the area's increased recreational popularity.
Thirsty visitors walking the sparsely vegetated the 1930s viewed the silt laden glacial water in the drainage below.
A Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) employee, Andy Haffner had s solution he modified this large glacier erratic into a drinking fountain by drilling a hole though it and piping in clear water from nearby Steep Creek. Soil and gravel have filled in around the base of the rock but you can see the holes drilled for the sign and the drinking fountain.
This is not the only carved rock feature along the Trail of Time. Carl Hegerup a former CCC enrollee working for the Forest Service carved three ice limits signs that can be found between here and the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center.
