1. Built to Last Marker
The Civilian Conservation Corps left a legacy of labor and public service.
This shelter represents a piece of the nation's past and attests to the historic popularity of this site. It represents work for the public good and one of the most successful New Deal efforts.
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built this shelter and several other features in the Mendenhall Valley between 1934 and 1940. The shelter has served as a registry boot and a display shelter. At the time of the shelter's construction, Mendenhall Glacier was visible from its open side.
The carved boulder is a legacy of a different sort. It is a trail sign that has outlasted some of the features it mentions: A portion of the original Nugget Creek Trail is now part of the East Glacier Loop Trail
