Wash Shed
The family moved their laundry from the old log pen to this site when their new home was completed in 1926. Water to do the washing was pumped by hand from a nearby well.

Clothes had to be boiled to remove the dirt, scrubbed on a washboard with homemade soap, and then pounded on a stump with a "battling board', rinsed and hung to dry on a clothesline. Soap and household cleaners were made by combining potash (processed ashes of hardwood trees) with beef tallow or lard.
