Inscription. Tens of thousands of emigrants came to California during the Gold Rush in the late 1840s on the Southern Emigrant Trail, the only route open for travel all year long. The foot trail was opened as a wagon road by the Mormon Battalion who hewed through rock in Box Canyon during the Mexican-American War in 1846. The Southern Emigrant Trail was a major thoroughfare for westbound travelers.
