1st Canadian Parachute Battalion

Formed on July 1st, 1942, the Battalion joined the British 6th Airborne Division in England in 1943 serving with them in Normandy, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Returning to Canada after VE Day, May 8th, 1945, the Battalion was stationed in Niagara-on-the-Lake awaiting transfer to the Japanese Theatre of War. Following VJ DAY, August 15, 1945, the Battalion was disbanded on September 30, 1945. Thus ended the service of this unique Battalion which, despite severe casualties, never lost a battle nor failed to achieve all objectives. Included in the many personal battle honours is a Victoria Cross recipiant.
Constitué le 1er juillet 1942, le Bataillon joint les rangs de la 6ème Division aéroportée britannique en 1943, en Angleterre, et sert pour cette division en Normandie,en Belgique, en Hollande et en Allemagne. De retour au Canada, après le jour de la Victoire en Europe, le 8 mai 1945, le Bataillon est stationné à Niagara-on-the-Lake en attendant son transfert vers des opérations se déroulant au Japon. Le 30 septembre 1945, à la suite du jour de la Victoire sur le Japon le 15 août 1945, le Bataillon unique qui malgré de lourdes pertes, n'a jamais perdu une bataille ni échoué dans l'atteinte de tous ses objectifs. La Croix de Victoriaf igure parmi les nom-breuses honneurs de guerre décernés à ses membres.

Photo faces east and south-east, along Scheaffe Road trail, on the south-west edge of The Commons. This grass field is 500 x 200 metres. Formerly a military base, now used for a dog walking field, and occasional parties like cross-border scout get-togethers.
