Winegard Walk is named for Dr. William "Bill" Winegard, whose lifelong devotion to service included his term as President of the University of Guelph from 1967 to 1975. Born in Hamilton, Ont., Winegard served in the Second World War from 1942 to 1945, qualifying as the youngest navigating officer in the Canadian Navy. He obtained a PhD in metallurgical engineering at the University of Toronto and taught there for several years, eventually serving as associate dean of graduate studies., Winegard was named as president in 1967, three years after the establishment of the University of Guelph. He led significant expansion of both the physical campus and its academic programs. Following his retirement in 1975, he was honoured by the naming of Winegard Walk, established along his daily route between the President's House and his office., After retiring from academia, Winegard continued his commitment to service by entering politics. He was elected as a Member of Parliament for Guelph in 1984 and served as the first federal minister of state (science and technology) from 1988 to 1993. He retired from politics in 1993 and was named an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1998.
