1. Every Day Is Earth Day At Carl Schurz Park Marker
Welcome to Carl Schurz Park!
Located on 15 acres along the East River, the park offers landscaped lawns and winding paths, magnificent trees and flowering gardens, playgrounds, and dog runs.
The park is a restorative greenspace and vital natural resource for the community. It is also a sanctuary for migrating birds, pollinators, and an important habitat for a growing resident wildlife population. Its biodiverse and resilient environment helps mitigate weather extremes.
We invite you to explore Every Day is Earth Day by visiting all eight panels throughout the park. You will discover the connections between each of the panels and how birds, trees, the East River, native plants, pollinators, soil, fungi and lichens work together to create a stable and sustainable landscape.

Mission: The mission of Carl Schurz Park Conservancy is to restore and beautify Carl Schurz Park, complementing the efforts of the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation. Our goal is to enhance the public's enjoyment and involvement in the park. The Conservancy organizes volunteers to execute its projects and sponsors community events that are open to all.
History: In 1963, neighbors organized the Mayor's Backyard Playground Committee with a focus on renovating the park playground. In 1974, with a broadened commitment, The Carl Schurz Park Association, a non-profit 501(c)(3), was incorporated, setting up the first public/private partnership for parks in New York City. In 2006, to reflect its mission more closely, the name was changed to Carl Schurz Park Conservancy.
Activities: Today the Conservancy maintains and restores park lawns and gardens, enriches and develops habitat for birds and other wildlife, cares for the park's 650 trees, restores and replaces park benches, replaces garbage receptacles, restores stone walls, stairs and iron fencing, maintains two dog runs, organizes hundreds of volunteers, and provides a diverse calendar of first-class family events.
Maintaining Carl Schurz Park as it is today is essential, but it is not enough.
In response to the urgent challenges of species decline, habitat loss, climate change and urban density, we are taking steps to restore native habitat, promote biodiversity and increase absorption of stormwater. Our goal is to ensure the health and viability of the park
