Wheeler D. Wright (1851 - 1933)
built his first home in Knowersville c. 1874 on a large plot of land extending between what is now Mill Street and Euclid Avenue. He was an architect. He designed several buildings in Altamont including the Union Free School on Grand Street. He was also an apiarist maintaining many hives on his property. His 1913 publication The Honey Bee, written for the NYS Department of Agriculture, remains as a definitive work. In 1886, he designed and built a new house on Euclid Avenue. The Mill Street house remained empty until the Altamont Girl Scout troop began using the building as a meeting place in 1933. The Altamont chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars acquired the building in 1956 and maintains it today as the Boyd Hilton VFW Post #7062.
