Inscription.
The Thaddeus Stevens Elementary School was one of the first publicly funded schools for African-American children in Washington, DC after the abolition of slavery in 1865. Built in 1868, the school is named after abolitionist and U.S. congressman Thaddeus Stevens. In addition to Steven's fight for the emancipation of slavery, he was a staunch defender of universal education for all regardless of race or creed.
