1. Woodlawn Cemetery Marker
Inscription.
Woodlawn Cemetery was established in the Tampa Heights neighborhood in 1888 by the City of Tampa as its new municipal cemetery. as space at downtown's Oaklawn Cemetery was becoming limited. Like Oaklawn, Woodlawn Cemetery is the final resting place for many notable Tampa residents, and burials were not limited or restricted on the basis of race, religion, or ethnicity. This is not to say that Woodlawn was not segregated. In fact, there was a separate section for burials of Blacks within the cemetery. Burials of note within Woodlawn include several former mayors of Tampa, former U. S. Congressman Stephen M. Sparkman, and Clara Frye, who opened and operated one of the first hospitals for Tampa's African American community.
