Inscription. The first burials took place in the 1840's, while this land was still owned by the federal government. In 1853. Moses W. Helms and his wife deeded 11 acres of land to New Hope Primitive Baptist Church for a place of worship and a graveyard. The church deeded the land to the city of Elba in 1877. The city added 1.4 adjoining acres on the north in 1948. In 1962, they added an additional 8.9 acres across the street. This enlarged the cemetery to 21 acres. The oldest marked grave is that of a child. George Yelverton, who died in 1849. The summer house was built in 1907 by the ladies of the town of Elba to have a place of shelter when visiting the cemetery.
