1. Mulberry Schoolhouse Marker

Inscription. Residents of the Mulberry community constructed the school in 1922 after purchasing the property from John Ridgeway and his wife, Georgie A. Ridgeway. Community members donated their time, talents, and materials to construct the schoolhouse. It provided a safe environment for local Black students to receive a quality education up to the eighth grade. The Mulberry School House played a critical role in educating residents of their voting rights during the Civil Rights era. A multi-purpose building, the schoolhouse was used for union meetings, Sunday School, community action meetings, quilting and sewing guilds. Listed in the Alabama Registry of Landmarks and Heritage July 15, 2021
