Goodland in Sherman County, Kansas — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Chambers Fountain
In 1929, the Round Table Club completed plans for a Victory Fountain, which would be dedicated to the American Legion once finished. The Ornamental Concrete Company of Omaha provided the plans and the city provided the concrete base. The fountain was dedicated on Armistice Day, 1929, with a bronze plaque and Congressman Charles I. Sparks delivered the address.
Originally, the central shaft had an eagle with outstretched wings on top. Each of the four sides of the central shaft had a lions head located just above the small bowl. Each lions head emitted a small stream of water into the bowl. Four frogs were placed around the outer rim of the fountain, spurting streams of water into the base of the fountain.
Over the years, the fountain fell into disrepair and in 2002, the Mann family, in honor of Craig Mann who died from cancer in 2000, restored the fountain. The frogs were replaced by lions and the eagle at the top no longer has spread wings. In 2004, city crews worked to get water flowing again and in 2015, the Mann family added the wrought iron fence.
