Pearl Sanders Creswell (1912 - 1994)

Creswell House
Inscription.
Following her graduation from Fisk University in 1932, Pearl Sanders married fellow alum Isaiah T. Creswell (1902-1992) and settled on Fisk's campus. She worked at Fisk for 40 years curating the Alfred Stieglitz Collection at the Carl Van Vechten Gallery. Pearl also promoted the arts and other activities in the African American community. She co-founded Mother's Study Group that became a chapter of Jack and Jill of America and served on the board of the Nashville branch of the NAACP.
Side 2:
In 1963 Pearl and I.T. Creswell contracted architect Robert Anderson of Donald E. Stoll and Associates and interior decorator Stephen Ferris to design a house befitting their busy lifestyle. To make the most of their small lot near Fisk University's campus, the house was designed in the mid-century modern style, seldom seen in Nashville. The interior combines openness with elements to ensure privacy and features a slate floor entryway, atrium and unique built-in cabinets.
