1. 200th Anniversary of South Canaan Township Settlement Marker
A German Reformed congregation was founded by Hans Ulrich Swingle ca 1790. It merged with the Methodist Protestant Church ca 1823. A small band of God fearing believers scored out timbers and erected this Meeting House at the cost of $1000. In 1831 both M.P. & M.E. congregations worshipped here until 1865 when it became solely M.P. under the ministry of Rev. R. J. Lucy who served for 38 years. This became the Bible Protestant Church in 1939. In 1975 the church merged with the Varden parish to erect a new church. This plaque dedicated Aug 1983 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the settlement of South Canaan Twp. by the citizens for preservation of local heritage.
