Kingfisher in Kingfisher County, Oklahoma — The American South (West South Central)
Peoples National Bank
In January of 1900, after stopping in the bank to withdraw funds for a personal financial matter, Col. Stone was ambushed, gunned down and robbed on a farm northeast of town, with his murderer quickly fleeing the country.
The manhunt for Stone's killer, the odd circumstances behind the murder and multiple trials leading to the conviction of James Walcher for the crime, make this one of the most infamous cases in Kingfisher's storied past.
