Inscription.
Work was begun near the Fish Ponds (Nebo) in 1890 by the Silver Valley Land and Water Company who planned on channeling water to the Calico Mining District. In 1893, the work was taken over by the Southern California Improvement Company with plans to re-route the canal four miles toward the Daggett Ranch and then another six miles to Minneola. Both companies ended in bankruptcy. Finally, in 1901, another attempt was made to complete the canal by the Van Dyke family who completed the section to their ranch by 1902. Redwood planks originally covered the top of the canal. The Daggett Ditch became the first large scale irrigation project in the Mojave, and continued operation until 1973.
