On November 10, 1775, two battalions of Continental Marines were formed as troops which were prepared to fight both on land and at sea, marking the birth of the United States Marine Corps.
The U.S. Marine Corps (USMC) conducts expeditionary and amphibious operations through combined arms, implementing its own infantry, artillery, aerial, and special operations forces.
In the Pacific theater of World War II, U.S. Marines took the lead in a massive campaign of amphibious warfare.
The USMC falls under the Department of the Navy along with its sister service, the U.S. Navy. Several Marine tactical aviation squadrons are embedded in Navy carrier air wings and operate from aircraft carriers.
