1. Ancient Mississippian Symbols Marker
Inscription. Thousands of Native American artifacts found in the southeastern United States contain symbols representative of the natural world. Examples of these symbols include spirals of wind, ripples of water, the sun circle and the all-seeing eye or “ogee.”

Chickasaws, who were known to live in and around present-day Mississippi, used these symbols in their artwork and everyday life. Modern Chickasaw artists continue to gain inspiration from these symbols in their work.

These symbols now represent culturally significant aspects of the Chickasaw people and are used throughout the Chickasaw Nation. One of the most common symbols, as seen on the plaza floor, is the spiral. The spiral symbolizes the wind, which depicts life's journey from birth to the afterlife. Like the wind, Chickasaws are reminded of their ancestors' many journeys
