1. Great Chickasaw Leaders: Piominko and Tishominko Marker
Inscription. Chickasaw leaders Piominko and Tishominko have come to symbolize the best qualities of what it means to be Chickasaw.

The relationship between the Chickasaw Nation and the United States dates back to the association between George Washington and Piominko. Chickasaw leader Piominko supported a young United States during the turbulent 1780s and 1790s. Piominko and Chickasaw warriors helped the U.S. establish a foothold in the southeastern part of the new country.

Piominko's legacy lives on well past his death in 1799. Statues honoring Piominko are located in Tupelo, Mississippi, and at the Chickasaw Capitol in Tishomingo, Oklahoma.

Tishominko was a respected Chickasaw who fought alongside his own people in battle and also aided American forces during the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Tishominko led the Chickasaw people through the time leading up to removal. Unfortunately, he passed away during the long removal that began in Mississippi. Tishominko was approximately 100 years old when he died.

A monument in Lee County, Mississippi, where Tishominko once lived, now stands as a memorial to his legacy. His image is also represented on the Great Seal of the Chickasaw Nation.
