• Cycads first appeared about 280 million years ago. Most cycad species that relied on dinosaurs for pollination are extinct.

• Once covering most of the landmass of Earth, including present-day Antarctica, cycads occur in the tropical and subtropical environments highlighted in green below.

• More than half of the 300+ species known are threatened or endangered

• Cycads are not palms and are more closely related to pine trees.

• The specimens here were transferred from a Miami garden in 1971.
