Freeport in Cumberland County, Maine — The American Northeast (New England)
Freeport History on Depot Street
Before the reconstruction of Depot Street in 2008, this stone was one of many that were used in a stone box culvert located about 15 feet under the road. The stone culvert was built before the street became a public way in October, 1886, at the request of E.B. Mallett Jr. and others. Mr. Mallett was a prominent developer at that time, owning a saw mill, a brickyard, a grist mill, a coal yard, a general store, and a large shoe factory.
