Inscription. The earliest houses on the Village grounds were built soon after St. Augustine was established in this general location in 1572 and throughout the following century. Most of the buildings that escaped the destructive effects of fire, hurricanes, rot and termites were destroyed during the 1702 attack by the English under the command of Carolina Governor Moore. Foundations and other traces of these early structures lie beneath the existing houses and throughout the Village properties especially in the eastern areas. Here, remnants nants of coquina footers and tabby floors have been unearthed by archaeologists.
