Your tour has led you to the south side, or chimney side, of the house. Although we don't have any photos of this side of the house as it looked in the 19th century, we do know that there was no chimney here until after the 1939 update. Before that date, the house had a center chimney and fireplace, the traditional chimney placement for the timber-frame architectural style. The center chimney and fireplace were removed during the renovation, and this handsome stone chimney and living-room fireplace were built.

According to Hope Dennis (1906-2006), co-Founder of the Dennis Farm Charitable Land Trust, family members gathered fieldstones for the chimney and fireplace from the grounds of the Dennis Farm and "wheeled them to the house in a wheelbarrow," as their ancestors had once gathered stones for the stonewalls that line the farm.

[Center photo caption reads] You can see the fireplace in this photo of the living room.

[Right photo caption reads] As you see in this photo. the south side of the house includes an entrance, on the left, to the lower basement level.
