Barn Complex
You are looking onto the remains of the foundation walls of the Dennis Farm Barn Complex. This [left-side] out-of-focus image is the only known photograph of the barn complex buildings as they looked from the 19th century thru the 1960s. During the 19th century, when the Dennis Family was actively farming, their livestock included "milking cows, oxen, horses, swine, sheep, poultry and barnyard animals." Butter, wool and maple syrup were among the products the family sold at market.
The Dennis Family stopped farming full-time in the early 20th century. During the mid-20th century, when the farm was the family's summer home only, cows grazed in the fields and the family had chicken and ducks. In this [bottom right] picture, you see cows standing behind the barnyard gate.
Funding for the signs you are reading, as you tour the farm, was made possible through a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Endless Mountains Heritage Region. The Dennis Farm Charitable Land Trust has also been awarded grants from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the National Endowment for the Humanities. We thank each of these generous institutions for their support.
