St. Michaels in Talbot County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
A Light Survivor
| | Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum | |
Three successive lightships marked the end of the Rappahannock spit, a shoal at the mouth of the Rappahannock River in Virginia, until a lighthouse was erected in 1869. In 1905, the Lighthouse Board reported that the light at Windmill Point at the mouth of the Rappahannock river near White Stone, Virginia was "one of the oldest screwpile lighthouses in the district, and structurally is not strong." Heeding this warning, the structure was reinforced with 1,000 tons of riprap stones. As a result, Windmill Point Light survived an ice floe in the winter of 1917-18 and remained standing until 1965, when the Coast Guard dismantled it.
