Inscription. Site of Battery Powell, one of the chain of seven redoubts built by Union troops to anchor the interior defensive line about the city. Captured briefly at noon on October 4 by CS Army forces after fierce fighting.
 
Erected 1988 by Mississippi Department of Archives and History.
