1. A Life on the Land Marker

Inscription. To the Paiute, home was not only a shelter made from juniper, but the entire landscape. Through this immense place the Paiute moved as if from room to room, gathering a certain plant here, another there. Lingering where the land offered its precious water in dripping springs, they cultivated native plants, weeding, pruning, and collecting what was ready: housekeeping on a grand scale.

The Paiute people built summer and winter shelters called wickiups made of native plant materials like willow and juniper bark.
