| | African-American History on the Shore | |
Born in Pocomoke, orphaned at an early age, and educated as a lawyer at Lincoln University in Pennsylvania, Stephen H. Long returned to Pocomoke to teach young people. Teacher, principal, and supervisor of Colored Schools in Worcester County, he sought funds to educate blacks, young and old, and to improve teacher salaries. On September 13, 1921, Long was killed for supporting the education of orphan boys who had been forced to work on farms and not attend schools. The Stephen H.
