Near Snow Hill in Worcester County, Maryland — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
Site of Workers' Cottages
Families were large, but the houses were small for the workers at Furnace Town. John Hill recalled that they were built around an open courtyard shaped in a "U" with streets on the three enclosed sides. Vegetable gardens were in the center of the "U" and behind the houses as well. It was not uncommon for Mom, Dad and a dozen children to live in the 1 ½ story homes with one room down and two rooms up built by the Maryland Iron Company in 1830.
Archaeological work has shown that Worker's Cottages were located in this parking lot. The integrity of the site was lost when it was planted in loblolly pines in 1977, after which the land was given to Furnace Town.
